Saint Andrew Uganda

Saint Andrew School and Parish have a history of supporting our brothers and sisters in Uganda. What began ten years ago with Fr. Matthias’ first visit to Chicago has grown and enriched our community.  Through the years, Saint Andrew has answered a variety of needs from bikes for Catechists to reach outstations to the construction of water wells and the building of schools.  As our relationship has grown, our efforts focus in three areas.

Connecting hearts parish to parish: Our financial support keeps Saint Charles Lwanga Church, rectory, classrooms and outstations functioning.  This parish located in Lwamata, Central Uganda, is Fr. Matthias’ current parish. Our support ensures Uganda parishioners experience important Sacraments in 20 distant outstations.

Connecting hearts through education: Our support also has helped Fr. Matthias build and expand high quality schools in several locations.  The first school built, our namesake – Saint Andrew Uganda - is located in Mubende and is a testament to strong Catholic education with vibrant teachers and eager students.  Currently, a new secondary school is underway and will be located adjacent to the elementary school campus at Saint Charles Lwanga. Over three years, $90,000 dollars will be raised to support its completion.  To date, fundraising is on track with initial construction.

Connecting hearts through scholarship – One Heart Uganda: Education changes lives; currently our community is making that change a reality for 60 elementary and secondary school students.  Often orphaned or at-risk, these bright, talented young people are given new hope through annual tuition sponsorships.  The program is inspired and modeled on the experience of an  initial student sponsored eight years ago.  After attending high quality elementary and secondary schools, she qualified for a full government scholarship and is currently attending Makerere University in Kampala. Saint Andrew School traditions
Each year Saint Andrew School conducts its own special fundraising efforts to support Fr. Matthias and his mission.  The October Race with the Bulldogs 5K gives half of its proceeds to support health and wellness initiatives in Uganda.  Each January, as part of Catholic Schools Week, Saint Andrew students gather their spare change for the Penny Challenge that results in a fierce competition between classrooms and a generous donation to the students in our sister parish and school.
